Me & Mr. Jones

Welcome to our little corner where you can keep up with us! I'm usually more reserved than what you'll read below. I'm an introvert that only opens up after I know you really well. But since this is all in writing and I can't actually see you it's much easier for me to be an open book. I hope you enjoy reading and learning about our little life and check back often.

Oh and I love comments like I love chocolate! So feel free to say "hey"!

This picture was taken during our first summer together at the Ohio State Fair.
Don't mind the big ugly gorilla and the monkey hanging off my arm, oh, and the glittery belt.
Let's remember this picture was taken over 10 years ago and that stuff was cool then (or so I thought!)

We are followers of Jesus Christ and He is our Lord and Savior. Period.

We met in high school during our sophomore year of gym class. I guess he'd been trying to talk to me for a while but I thought he was too popular to like a girl like me. He asked me to be his partner at the beginning of the softball unit and little did he know that I had played since I was in 1st grade. When I threw the ball at him he still says to this day that's what got him hooked :) I'd like to say that from that moment on we started dating but we didn't start dating until a few months after that. We became really good friends and finally after I broke up with a guy I had been going out with he saw his chance to move in and then we started dating and the rest is history!

We've had almost every side job and career job together. What can I say, we just can't live--or work--without each other! Some people would hate working with their spouse but I really believe God gave us extra patience and endurance so we can work together since we do work so well together. In high school: a pizza place called Small Town Pizza (I still crave that pizza today and we believe that the reason it closed down was because the employees got free food, and boy, did we eat!) Hollister Co. (ok, a little embarrassed by this). In college: Cracker Barrel (or the Crack House). Careers: First Church of God, Taylors, SC; East Side Church of God, Anderson, IN; and now missionaries for Missionary Athletes International and the Urban Eagles in Charlotte, NC.

I studied to be a teacher but decided half way through my senior year of college I didn't want to be a full-time teacher in the classroom. Travis studied bible and religion. He thought he'd eventually be a senior pastor. Neither one of us are actually doing what we thought we'd be doing but we are definitely using our degrees. God gave us new dreams and new passions and we are so blessed and happy to be where we are instead of in a classroom and behind a pulpit (not that those jobs aren't praiseworthy! They just aren't for us at this time).

We are missionaries for Missionary Athletes International and the Urban Eagles. We are doing something we never ever dreamed! We didn't even know it was possible! We work where we live trying to be a good neighbor in a neighborhood that many would consider at-risk. We place boys on soccer teams who would otherwise not have the means to play. We connect with churches in the community to help meet needs of the families around us. We are one of the only caucasian families in our neighborhood. Sometimes we forget we're in America. We're predicting that our child will know 4 different languages and we're ok with that: Burmese, Nepalese, Spanish, and of course, English.

I love to sew! I actually hated home economics in middle school, but ever since Travis bought me a sewing machine a few years ago he hasn't been able to pull me away from it! I taught myself how to use it and I'm looking up tutorials and patterns all the time trying to learn and create new things. Thank God for Pinterest because that's where I find most of my inspirations and pin all of my findings. My mom thinks my love for sewing skipped a generation since her mother loved it and she hates it. I'm ok with hearing that I take after my beautiful Grandma Charlotte :)

We grew up in Columbus, Ohio so naturally we are die-hard Buckeye fans. That will never change!

We've lived in 7 different houses in the first 7 years of our marriage.

We are Mommy and Daddy to Anna Jubilee and Theo Shepherd. They have changed our lives in more ways than we could've ever imagined! Being a parent has been the most difficult thing we've ever done but it's also been the absolute best thing we've done. I don't remember life without my littles and I don't mind one bit. We learn something new everyday with these two. We praise God for giving us the privilege to be their parents and we pray everyday that He would give us grace as we maneuver through the crazy world of parenthood.

  2. Jess, I was here only for the banana muffins.
I am on the verge of becoming a bit of a recipe addict on Pinterest. Once I have the recipe, I never stay around for the blog. However, your little ‘about me’ up top caught my attention. We, too, are “just a couple of 20-somethings trying to live in simple extravagance” (never thought to word it like that-I like it!). So, I clicked on the About Us page. Your #5 really drew me in. My husband and I are both very mission-oriented-wanting to be overseas, but “stuck” here for the time being. So after reading you say, “Sometimes we forget we're in America. We're predicting that our child will know 4 different languages and we're ok with that”, I had to find out more about this organization and what all they do. Ok, maybe you won’t think this is as strange as I did, but it kind of blew me away there for a few minutes. So, I begin my Google search about Urban Eagles, and there on the first video clip I watch I see one of my good friends from college. He is currently playing for NC Eagles and is apparently very involved with Urban Eagles.. Where have I been?! ha (I guess if I had’ve been a better friend and kept up more, I would have known this) It’s crazy how many things are interrelated. He blows my mind continually. :)
I would like to learn more about MAI and Urban Eagles, though. How did you and your husband first get involved?
    Sorry for that long spill!

    1. Hi Taylor, Thanks for stopping by and posting--I'm so glad you did! It is such a small world and crazy how you know someone else who works for the Urban Eagles. Who is it? I would love to share more about MAI, the Urban Eagles, and our story but it'd probably be better if I shared it through an email (it's a long story! lol) My email is jonesn4buckeyes@yahoo.com, just email your email and I'll write you a really long message (lol) about what we do and how God led us here :)

  3. Jess,

I totally baked those muffins. My wife and I are also 20 somethings haha, and i guess because we are i was looking at our "shared" pinterest account the other day. I freaking love muffins so i always get sucked in. however i never bake, but this was easy and tastes amazing. I am a former college soccer player that is grossly out of shape (just started weight watchers though!), so ill have you know that this recipe is only 2.5 ww points per muffin. now you dont have to feel guilty for eating so many! alright lastly i just wanted to encourage you, I know much about the Eagles and their ministry. I want to say what you are doing matters, and that how you love the kids through soccer may be the only true example of the Father's heart they ever see. Thank you for being a front line missionary. When Jesus spoke of going to the nations, he meant America too! So even if it doesnt seem as glamorous as over sees mission work, you my friends are considered warriors on the front lines. Be blessed, and encouraged. Keep saving souls one stepover and bicycle kick at a time!

    1. Hi Aaron! I'm so glad you enjoyed the muffins! I'm not a huge health nut but I love when healthy foods mix with deliciousness so these muffins are the bomb in my mind! :) Also, WOW, thank you so much for those encouraging words! When I read what you wrote to my husband he was tremendously blessed and blown away by what you wrote. Sometimes it can be difficult to see the fruit of your labor so when the Lord speaks through others with words of encouragement we can't help but have reassurance that this is exactly what He's called us to. So you know of the Eagle? I saw you're in Wheaton, IL, so you must know about the Chicago Eagles? The Chicago Eagles are actually starting an Urban Eagles there in Chicago this fall! You should check it out. The contact person is Cody Snouffer. Thanks again! P.S. I loved your analogy at the end, gave me chills! Take care :)

  4. OK so looks like everyone's here for the muffins! I'm not 20-something anymore, but did have a babe in January, who is seriously the cutest boy I've ever seen (note mama-bias:-), and am a missionary in Scotland...love your story, your passion and your joy:-). Will try the muffins and see if I love those too (I craved bananas all the way through pregnancy and am now an addict as well...)

  9. Found you through Money Saving Mom -

I didn't read all the posts regarding the Oat/Banana muffins so I am sorry if this is a repeat but I made them this morning and stevia powder converts - 1 teaspoon is equal to 1 sugar. I did the 2 Tablespoons like yours listed and they are way too sweet. I will try them again as this seems like a great recipe. Just wanted to let you know! Love your blog!

  10. I was about to say that I just discovered your blog following the banana muffin recipe from pinterest, but I see everyone is saying that LOL! What an amazing story, God used banana muffins to draw the people to you! We try so hard in life to draw people to us, funny to see how God does the work in the strangest ways :) Anyway, I came for the muffins but then saw your "About Us" description and realized there was more than muffins to this girl :) I noticed also that you are in Charlotte, I am not far from there! Nice to see a local face :) I look forward to reading more about you, your beautiful family, and your fabulous muffins!
